HPD SWAT Training at HFS

Posted on August 24, 2025 in: General News

The Huntsville Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit was invited to use the old Holy Family School building for training before it was demolished. This afforded HPD SWAT a unique opportunity to train in a real school building using tools such as detonation devices to gauge their effectiveness and how best to use them in a real situation.

Officer Taylor Stegall, a member of HPD SWAT and St. Joseph Parish, coordinated the training activity that involved approvals from HPD, the Huntsville City Attorney, the Diocese of Birmingham, and St. Joseph Parish. Officer Stegall also conducted a Show and Tell for HFS students to show them the SWAT vehicle and answer questions.

In addition to the training, HFS provided a number of doors from the old school that could be used at the SWAT training facility.

The building that began in the late 1950s and educated tens of thousands of students served the Huntsville community one last time.
