CENTERING PRAYER RETREAT

An Introduction to Centering Prayer retreat will be held at the Benedictine Sisters Retreat Center in Cullman, January 18-20, 2019.  This form of Christian prayer is rooted in the ancient Christian contemplative tradition and is intended to foster a deeper intimacy with Christ.  Private rooms and the ability to maintain silence are required. St. Joseph will host a summer kids’ event called Shipwrecked VBS from June 11 to June 15.    At Shipwrecked, kids discover that Jesus rescues them! They participate in memorable Bible-learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, make and devour yummy treats, experience one-of-a-kind Bible adventures and collect Bible Memory Buddies to remind them of God’s love. Both Carmen Amato, our Director of Religious Education, and I are concerned about parent supervision of young children before, during and after Mass.  Two Sundays ago, as Carmen was returning to the church after Religious Education, she encountered a young school-aged child outside the building, moving towards the parking lot. The child had the opportunity to leave the church premises because he was not with a parent or guardian. Luckily, nothing happened. The Seder Meal will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 25 in the Fr. Messmer Center. Tickets for the meal are $8.00 per person and $5.00 for children ages 3-12 years. There is a maximum cost of $25.00 per family. On behalf of the families and individuals we have served during the year 2017, the Saint Vincent DePaul Society would like to thank St. Joseph for its generous support.   Thanks to the generosity of St. Joseph parishioners, the society was able to provide assistance to 318 families and individuals,   including rent payment assistance for 106 families and assistance with utilities to 147 families. Additionally, we provided food assistance to 148 grateful and deserving families. Your support and generosity makes this possible.

Habitat for Humanity Project

St. Joseph will partner with several other local parishes and churches to build a home for a  deserving family through the Habitat for Humanity program.  The build is planned to start on Saturday, March 17. Fasting and Abstinence Guidelines

Lenten fast and abstinence is a call to a deeper spirit of penitential conversion. Ideally, this personal penance should reach out to the rest of the world through acts of charity and mercy. The real purpose of the fast and abstinence is “to develop the inner freedom to resist.” Abstinence means not eating meat (beast or fowl). All Catholics, age 14 and older, are obliged to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent, and the Paschal fast of Good Friday. Fasting means not eating as much as usual. BISHOP ROBERT BAKER has issued the following statement about Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday:  “For the first time since 1945, Valentine’s Day this year falls on Ash Wednesday.  Some have wondered whether a dispensation from the standard laws of fast and abstinence would be granted.  Out of respect for the importance of Ash Wednesday and the way this custom underlines the importance of the Lenten season at its outset, a dispensation will not be given.  Those who wish to celebrate Valentine’s Day may do so the day before (Mardi Gras) or on another non-penitential day.”
